Pastele, à,28 x 20 cm, lo. ri. sign. de la Tour, in a fine original frame, uninspected out of frame. On one backing cardboard later inscription with life data '5. Sept. 1764 - 17. Febr. 1788'. - French portrait painter, the 'prince of pastel painters'. T. studied 1719-22 at the Académie de St. Luc in Paris. In 1725 he went to London and established as a sought-after portrait painter. He could continue this succes after his return to France in 1727. A much admired portrait of Voltaire earned him membership in the Paris Academy. T. painted the likenesses of many great personalities of his time, among them king Louis XV, Pompadour, Rousseau and d'Alembert. Mus.: Paris (Louvre), Los Angeles (Getty Center), Dresden (Gem.-Gal.
