We thank Christiane Remm for scientific support. - Provenance: The grandmother of the consignor had personally met Schmidt-Rottluf at her then residence Jershöft/Hinterpommern before 1945 and received the picture from him. She gave it to the parents of the consignor in 1964 for their wedding; thence by descent. - One of the most important exponents of expressionist art, began studying architecture in Dresden in 1905, besides Kirchner, Heckel a. Bleyl he was co-founder of the 'Brücke' in 1905, the style of which became distinctive for German expressionism, in 1911 he moved to Berlin a. exhibited with the 'Neue Secession Berlin', the 'Blauer Reiter' a. the 'Sonderbund' in Cologne, after the war he also exhibited at the Documenta, many of his artworks were seized a. destroyed by the Nazis as 'degenerate', in 1946 he was made professor in Berlin, in 1964 he initiated the fouding of the Brücke museum in Berlin.
