Designed in 1908, first moulded in 1909 in the Schwarzburger Werkstätten Unterweißbach, made soon after. Porcelain, white. On the underside embossed stamp 'Schwarzburger Werk-stätten für Porzellankunst' and embossed lacing fox, incised model no. 'U9'. H. 19,8 x w. 35,6 x d. 27 cm. - The impressions gained on his journey through Russia in 1906 had a lasting influence on Barlach's sculptures. The first motif he created in 1909 in Unterweissbach was the 'Russian Lovers'. The design for this had already been created in 1908 and is reminiscent of Barlach's pencil drawing of 1907; the model was also moulded in bronze by Noack in 1908. - Literature: Cat. rais. A journey to Russia became distinctive for his work. He first exhibited sculptures from Russian folk life at the Berlin secession in 1907. Subsequently he received many important public commissions. B. was very much pressurized by the Nazis, a. many of his works were seized or destroyed. Today he is appreciated as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th cent.
