Pen and ink drawing, 22,5 x 17,5 cm, lo. ri. dat. 1899, on the reverse letter by Robley to Prof. Dieck, unframed. - Provenance: From the estate of the Berlin dentist Prof. Wilhelm Dieck who was also member of the 'Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte'. - English soldier and explorer. Like his father, R. pursued a military career. He first served in Burma from 1858 and was already interested in local culture and society there; his talent for drawing was very useful to him. In 1863 he was sent to New Zealand and began documenting Maori culture, among it tattoos. He also had a collection of preserved Maori heads. In 1847 he quit the army and published the knowledge he had acquired in and about New Zealand.
