C. 1918. Dark-brown patinated bronze. On the plinth sign. 'A. GAUL', on the back narrow side numbered copy 'VII'. H. 32,3 cm. - One of the two deer Gaul created as a life-size model for a planned but never executed monument for the painter Walter Leistikow. Cassirer sold a total of 10-12 casts from 1919 onwards. - Literature: Cat. Rais. Gabler 190 (model from 1913); Gabler 266 (revised version from 1918). - Provenance: Privately owned since 1930. - Animal sculptor and graphic artist, studied first at the drawing academy in Hanau and later at the academy in Berlin, was a master pupil of Reinhold Begas and one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession, member of the Deutscher Werkbund, professor in 1908, most important German animal sculptor of his time.
