After studying at the Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule and at the Kunstgewerbeschulen Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf H. became master student of Th. Hagen in Weimar and also took lessons with Chr. Rohlfs. He joined the artist's colony in Schwaan in Mecklenburg as well as the Deutscher Künstlerbund. He travelled extensively to Switzerland, France and South America.
