M. studied art and philosophy in Düsseldorf and Cologne since 1950. Together with O. Piene he founded Zero in Düsseldorf in 1957. As early as 1958 he exhibited at the Documenta for the first time, in 1970 he represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. M. often uses light and motion in his artworks. He is considered to be one of the foremost innovaters of post-war art and was awarded many prizes.
