L. first studied chemistry before studying painting at the Halle University of Art and Design. After a period as a freelance artist, he became a master student of Bernhard Heisig in Leipzig. L. was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden and at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin.
