Nuremberg, c. 1600. Rectangular body of fire-gilt brass, on four ball feet, openwork edge reinforcements of copper, a mock keyhole on the front, movable keyhole cover on the lid with signature 'MICHEL MAN', lock mechanism with chapel and 4 tumblers, decorative fittings of gilt brass, inside of lid with stamped sign. 'MM'. Lid, wall and both sides of the base with finely engraved decoration. On the lid allegorical representations of the virtues of justice with the attributes scales and sword as well as of faith with cross and chalice, on the wall surrounding representations of further virtues such as prudence, bravery, temperance etc.. On the inside of the base an oval cartouche with mascaron and stamped sign 'MM', on the base a jumping wolf in landscape. Carrying handle missing. H. 4,5 x w. 7,2 x d. 5 cm. - German art locksmith, learned in Nuremberg, became a master in Augsburg and then worked in Fürth and Wöhrd near Nuremberg. His small brass chests were praised not only for their fine decoration but also for their ornate locking mechanism.Even among contemporaries, the small chests were coveted collectors' items for chambers of art and curiosities.
