G. 2001, on the reverse sign. and dat., on the stretcher label of Galerie Brockstedt with title 'Das Gesicht auf nackter Schulter'. - Painter and graphic artist, one of the most important figurative German artists of the present. G. studied 1957-64 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin with H. Orlowski and P. Janssen and in 1962 participated in O. Kokoschka's summer academy in Salzburg. In 1973, together with others, he founded the artist group 'Schule der neuen Prächtigkeit' (School of New Magnificence), which was committed to figurative painting. In Hamburg he was a guest lecturer at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in 1976/77 and a stage designer at the Schauspielhaus from 1985-88. G. was a member of the Free Academy of Hamburg. From 1992-2002 he also held a professorship in Nuremberg. G. was awarded, among others, the Grand Federal Cross of Merit and the Hannah Höch Prize. As a portraitist and painter of figurative images, G. is an unsparing realist, whose sometimes grotesque ironic exaggerations serve as a means of recognition.
