G. studied at the Dresden academy from 1814-19 and travelled to Rome in 1821 with a royal travel grant. At first he joined the circle around Schnorr von Carolsfeld, without adopting the style of the Nazarenes, later he sought contact with J. A. Koch and H. Reinhold.
