Due to the early death of his father, C. had to support the family by working in a bank at the age of 16. The banker paid C. lessons with F. Diday. In 1837, he moved to Paris and traveled from there to Germany and the Netherlands; later to Italy. C. was a highly decorated landscape painter, including being a member of the Legion of Honor. Among his clients were Napoleon III and the Russian Tsar, whose children he taught drawing. Mus.: St. Petersburg (Hermitage), Paris (Louvre), London (Nat.
