Oil/wood. 46 x 35 cm. Up. le. inscribed 'Heraclytus', on the reverse Christie's block stamp. Min. rest. - Flemish history painter, a main master of northern alpine mannerism. J. became an apprentice of J. Snellinck around 1584. After a trip to Rome he became master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1601. He is considered the most important history painter of his homeland before Rubens. His works still decorate many churches in Flanders. Mus.: Madrid (Prado), Vienna (Kunsthist.
