J. studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, became a member of the November Group in Berlin in 1923 and exhibited at the gallery 'Der Sturm' in 1927. The National Socialists imposed an exhibition ban on his non-representational paintings. In 1953 he became a professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, where Eugen Schönebeck and Rainer Fetting were among his students. Lit.: Vollmer.
