1858. Oil/canvas. 121 x 76,5 cm. Lo. le. sign. and dat. Fr. Geselschap 1858. Some rest. - German history and figure painter, brother of Eduard G. G. studied at the Dresden Academy under J. Schnorr von Carolsfeld, in 1855 he moved to Düsseldorf to G. Schadow and E. Bendemann. After a stay in Italy in 1866-71, he was able to establish himself in Berlin, where he painted numerous villas and in 1879-90 the Hall of Fame of the Zeughaus. He also designed frescoes depicting the history of the city for the Hamburg City Hall, but was unable to complete them due to illness. G. is one of the most virtuoso history painters of the Empire.
