H. sudied at the Dresden academy since 1893, thereafter in Karlsruhe and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was co-founder of the avantgardist 'Gruppe der XI' in Berlin in 1892. In 1903 he became professor in Weimar, in 1916 in Dresden.
