1899. Bronze, black patinated. H. 53,5 cm, l. 104 cm, d. 36 cm. On the base sign. Mattes, foundry stamp on the side GUSS V.A. BRANDSTETTER MÜNCHEN. Depicted is the athletic male nude of a bent, forward-running man chasing a ball, which he just reaches with his fingertips. - Other copies are in the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen - Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. - Literature: Catalogue of the International Art Exhibition of the Verein bildender Künstler Münchens (e.V.), "Secession" 1900, No. 362, Fig. 45 - German sculptor and painter. Education at the Kunstgewerbeschule Nuremberg (1890-1894), 1894 entry into the sculpture class of Wilhelm von Rümann at the Kgl. Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, 1907 own workshop in Munich. - Mattes and his famous contemporary Franz von Stuck were representants of the Symbolism. He then went to the religious sculptural art and created numerous works for churches in Munich, also he produced fountains, reliefs, war memorials, busts and nude figures.
