Safavid Dynasty. 1557 A.D. Ink and gold on paper. Folio: 25,7 x 15,2 cm, text panel: 14,1 x 3,1 cm. With marginal damage and small tears, small worm traces. The folio is from 'Yusuf and Zulaykha', composed by the Persian poet Jami (1414-1492) and copied in 1557 by the calligrapher Mahmud ibn Ishaq Al-Shabibi (verifiable from 1518/19-1585). Inscribed on both sides, it comprises 2 panels of text with 14 lines each, written in fine nasta'liq script in black ink, framed by fine lines in red, gold and blue, the outer margins decorated with fine floral tendrils, birds and animals. - A comparable manuscript page by Al-Shabibi is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. - Provenance: Private property, Hamburg. The manuscript page comes from the estate of Prof. Friedrich Sarre (1865-1945), art historian, Oriental archaeologist and important collector of Islamic art. Sarre is considered the founder of Islamic archaeology and was director of the Islamic department of the Königl./Staatl. Museen zu Berlin (today Museum für Islamische Kunst) from 1921-31 -
