Kestner-Gesellschaft Hannover a. others, cat. no. 102 - Provenance: Kestner-Gesellschaft Hannover, cat. no. 102; there acquired by Jürgen Harten, director of Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. - American painter with roots in Guatemala and Denmark. He studied in San Diego in 1925-26, then at the Munich Academy with H. Hoffmann and in Paris. In 1929 he returned to the U.S. and taught, most recently at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore. His artistic career began with sculptures and figurative painting before he found his specific form of expression with mathematically based color field painting that drew on the theories of Goethe. The artist, who was polyglot from the beginning, participated in numerous international exhibitions. He also had solo exhibitions at the Guggenheim in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others, and was also represented at the most important group exhibitions, including repeatedly at Documenta.
