H. studied at the Dresden academy under C. Bantzer and O. Gußmann. He met H. von Marées and E. Hildebrandt in Florence and the 'Blauer Reiter' in Munich. In Berlin he was co-founder of the 'Neue Sezession' as well as of the 'Novembergruppe'. Since 1910 he lived in Switzerland. Lit.: Vollmer.
