L. studied at the the Dresden academy under R. Müller and L. von Hofmann. 1926-38 he was professor for landscape painting in Berlin, in 1935 he exhibited together with O. Dix. He resigned as professor because of the cultural policy of the Nazis and moved to South Germany. In 1950 he taught at the Carnegie institute in Pittsburgh. Mus.: Mannheim, Darmstadt.
