L. first studied chemistry, before studying painting at the Burg Giebichenstein College of Art and Design from 1977-82. After a period as a freelance artist, he became a master student of Bernhard Heisig in Leipzig. L. was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and since 1993 at the Weißensee School of Art in Berlin. The artist lives and works in Berlin. Already in 1990 he exhibited as a representative of East German art in the USA, in 1994 his works were also represented at the Venice Biennale.
