Around 1700. Oil/wood. 51,5 x 45,5 cm. Retouchings. - Flemish portrait, history and figure painter. W. was taught painting in the studios of C. Picolet and E. van der Neer in Rotterdam. Since 1676 he worked as free lance artist and was in the board of the Rotterdam painter's guild in 1690/91. In 1969 he was appointed painter to the court in Düsseldorf by Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz. W. also painted portraits of other regents, among them duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick and king August II of Saxonia-Polonia. He was one of the most sought-after painters of his time.
