P. grew up in Japan and moved to Hamburg with her family at the age of ten. She studied in Düsseldorf and Berlin from 1937-43 and again at the Munich Academy in 1946. Together with her husband, the artist Max Hermann Mahlmann, she is an important representative of Concrete Art in Hamburg.
