Early 20th cent. Bronze, dark patinated. H. 54 cm, green marbled stone plinth: H. 3,5 cm. Sign. H. LEDERER fec., foundry mark Akt.Ges. H. Gladenbeck u. Sohn U 469. Figure of the fencer with beautiful dark patina. Gladenbeck's version was modelled on the large sculpture of the fencer created in 1901/04 for the so-called 'Fechterbrunnen' on the University Square in Breslau - German sculptor and medalist, one of the most important and prolific sculptors of the Wilhelmine era. After completing his training in Znaim, Lederer settled in Berlin in 1895 as a freelance sculptor and created important monuments, including the colossal Bismarck monument in Hamburg and the equestrian monument to Emperor Friedrich III. in Aachen.
