Inconspicuous rest., relined. - Provenance: From a Schleswig-Holstein Manor - Italian landscape and veduta painter and architect, one of the main masters of European architecture and ruin painting of the 18th century. P. initially trained as a stage designer, and from 1711 he was taught by Benedetto Luti in Rome. In addition to paintings, he also executed numerous decorations for Roman palaces. In 1755 he became director of the Accademia di S. Luca. P. was also a member of the French Academy in Rome. It was there that he met the French ruin painter Hubert Robert, who continued P.'s legacy with virtuosity. Mus.: Paris (Louvre), New York (Metrop.
