1898. Oil/canvas. 24,5 x 32,5 cm. Lo. le. sign. and dat. E. Volkers 1898. - German horse and figure painter. V. studied at the Dresden academy under E. W. Rietschel and J. Schnorr von Carolsfeld and continued his studies since 1852 at the Munich academy under the animal painters A. and F. Adam. He settled in Düsseldorf in 1857 and joined the artist's group 'Malkasten'. He was promoted by Carol I of Romania and in 1867 was appointed painter to the Romanian court. Besides horses he painted subjects from the Romanian folk life.
