H. was initially a pupil of Schwerdtgeburth, then of Friedrich Preller, whose heroic landscapes were to have a formative influence on H. Between 1842 and 1859, he frequently travelled to Italy and Switzerland before settling back in Germany. He was appointed professor in Weimar in 1859.
