H. was initially a pupil of Schwerdtgeburth, then of Friedrich Preller, whose heroic landscapes were to have a formative influence on H. Between 1842 and 1859, he frequently travelled to Italy and Switzerland before settling back in Germany. He was appointed professor in Weimar in 1859. His works were repeatedly exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and at the Berlin Academy Exhibition. Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Hannover (Kestner-Mus.), Leipzig, Stuttgart, Weimar, Jena.
