Around 1930. Bronze, dark patinated. H. 80 cm. Sign., foundry mark A. BISCHOFF BRONCEBILDGIESSEREI DÜSSELDORF-OBERKASSEL. Atlethic young man in swimwear with his hands on his hips in a self-confident pose. The work of Georg Kolbe and Fritz Klimsch was an important source of inspiration for the artist in the body-emphasising depiction of the swimmer - German sculptor. G. received his training at the Kunstgewerbeschule Dortmund and later studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a master student of Karl Janssen and Richard Langer. In 1924 he won first prize in the competition organised by the city of Cologne for a Siegfried monument and worked in Cologne until 1928, then in Dortmund and Düsseldorf. His work is closely linked to the theme of mining, and he also created numerous small bronzes, such as figures of sportsmen, dancers and animals. Lit.: AKL Saur
