W. studied at the academies of Groningen, The Hague and Rotterdam. In 1920 he was a pupil of E. L. Kirchner in Davos, who was to have a decisive influence on him. In 1918 he was one of the co-founders of the artist group 'De Ploeg' in Groningen, and in 1953 he became a professor at the Amsterdam Academy.
