Skulptur, Malerei, Design, Architektur, exh. cat Bremen 1998, fig. 7 - Important German sculptor and architect who came to Expressionism via Art Nouveau. After an apprenticeship as a stonemason and wood sculptor, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy. In Paris, he worked in Auguste Rodin's studio and met Paula Modersohn-Becker. In 1911, he was appointed professor at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. From 1914 he worked in Worpswede.
