C. studied from 1906 at the Düsseldorf Academy under E. von Gebhardt, then at the art school there under L. von Hofman and others. In 1919, together with G. Wollheim and others, he founded the artists' group 'Das junge Rheinland'. He was already teaching at the Düsseldorf Academy in the early 1930s and was head of a painting class there from 1947-52. His urban landscapes, which are close to New Objectivity, often take on a lyrical character through anecdotal details. Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Cologne (Mus.
