The model for Gladenbeck's design was the large sculpture of the fencer created in 1901/04 for the so-called 'Fechterbrunnen' on the University Square in Breslau - German sculptor and medalist, one of the most important and prolific sculptors of the Wilhelmine era. After completing his training in Znaim, Lederer settled in Berlin in 1895 as a freelance sculptor and created important monuments, including the colossal Bismarck monument in Hamburg and the equestrian monument to Emperor Friedrich III. in Aachen.
