Vitra, Birsfelden. Designed 1956, made 1998. Cast aluminum, tubular metal, plywood with nut veneer, black leather. Lounge chair: H. 82 x 80 x 85 cm, Ottoman: H. 45 x 65 x 57 cm. Two manufacturer's labels. Min. faded, min. traces of usage. The elegant armchair with ottoman is one of the most important classics of 20th century furniture design - American designer couple whose functional designs significantly shaped the history of post-war design. Charles Eames initially studied architecture in St. Louis and opened his own architecture firm in 1930, teaching design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan from 1940. 1941 Marriage to Ray Kaiser, who studied painting. From 1946 production of Eames furniture designs by the Hermann Miller company in Zeeland, Michigan, and construction of the legendary 'Eames House', from 1957 collaboration with Vitra. 1964-65 the couple was responsible for the IBM pavilion at the World's Fair in New York.
