Around 1922. Bronze, brown patinated. Bronze: H. 50 x 60 x 9,5 cm, stone plinth: H. 2 cm. Monogrammed kr. on the plinth (probably added later). Minor age-typical efflorescence on the ventral side. Exquisite Art Nouveau bronze with which Krieger proves his outstanding position among the animal sculptors of his time. - He depicts the animal at the moment when it has obviously scented something, with a tense posture and a straight, attentive gaze. The depiction reveals 'the deepest understanding not only of the animals' physique, but also of their character. They are indeed portraits of a striking resemblance', said Ludwig Heck, biologist and zoo director in Berlin, in 1921 (quoted from cat. rais.Krieger, p. 75) - Expertise: We would like to thank Dr. M. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, Krieger studied briefly at the Kunstgewerbeschule München in 1906/07 and trained as a self-taught sculptor from 1901. From 1907 he participated in the exhibitions of the Munich Secession, the large Berlin art exhibitions and from 1937-1944 in the annual Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Kunst.
