1960. Oil/canvas. 80 x 60 cm. Lo. ri. sign. and dat. Hans Thiemann - 60 as well as sign., dat. and titled on the stretcher 'Atelier des Porträtisten'. - German painter, graphic artist and stage designer. Following his participation in the free painting class with Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, among others, at the Bauhaus in Dessau, he studied at the art academy in Dresden and at the Bauhaus in Berlin. From 1945 to 1947, T. was a member of the group ‘Die Fantasten’ and co-founder of the Berlin ‘Neue Gruppe’ in 1949. In 1954 he received the Berlin Art Prize. From 1960 to 1976, T. was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. T. is characterised by meticulously thought-out compositions with recurring metaphors, multiple allusions and borrowings from pittura metafisica.
