Since 1849 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. In 1857 he was made chevalier de la légion d'honneur, in 1901 he was appointed official painter to the French marine. His oeuvre is dominated by subjects from his numerous travels round the Mediterranean Sea. Mus.: Paris (Louvre a. others), New York (Metrop.
