Expressive, stele-like sculpture reduced to the essentials in an archaic formal language influenced by Khmer and Aztec sculpture - One of the most important German sculptors of the post-war period, he initially studied art history and German language and literature in Cologne and from 1957 at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he later taught as a professor of sculpture. He worked mainly as a stone sculptor.
