Gabriel, relined. - Painter, draughtsman a. graphic artist, as early as twelve years old he was taught at the Amsterdam academy 1840-43, 1844 he was pupil of B.C. Koekkoek in Kleve, he continued his studies as autodidact, joined the artists colony Osterbeek, the so called Dutch Barbizon, in 1860 he moved to Brussels, where he again took lessons under W. Roelofs a. changed his style from romantic to realistic, his straight compositions a. his reduced desing vocabulary gained him late recognition a. the reputation of being a principal master of the Hague school, today he is considered to be one of the most important landscape painters of the 19th. century.
