Jäger pinxit AD 1684, min. rest., relined. - The biblical book of Daniel describes how the Babylonian king Belshazzar desecrated the liturgic vessels stolen from the Jerusalem temple. Immediately a hand wrote on the wall to announce misfortune to the king. He was killed the same night. - The scheme of composition of the painting at hand can be found in variants in several paintings from the workshops of the Antwerp painter families Francken and Jordaens and can be traced back at least to the early 17th century.
