Oil/wood, 10,5 x 16 cm, sign. lo. ri. Cals. - Painter a. graphic artist from a family of labourers, after apprenticeship as engraver he studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris under L. Cogniet a. worked as his assistant in painting the ceiling of the Salle des Papyrus in the Louvre, exhibiting in the Salon since 1835 he had no success until he associated himself with the Barbizon artists where he made friends with J.B. Jongkind, after moving to Honfleur in 1873 he had close contact with E. Boudin a. A.
