A very rare and large cover jar with plastical ram"s head handles

China, Northern Dynasties (ca. 6th/7th cent.). Ceramic with olive-green glaze. Bellied spherical shape on 3 small feet with cylindrical cover. The wall with a sumptuous relief decoration in the shape of a rhomb grid. The shoulder with a relief border of reclined mythical creatures. Side handles and cover pommel in the shape of a ram"s head. Exceptionally well preserved. H. 38 cm, diam. 35,5. - The result of QED Laboratoire, Aix-en-Provence, thermoluminescence test no. QED1208/FC-0308 is consistent with the dating of this lot. - The tone of the glaze and the sumptuos moulded decoration is typical for ceramics of the Northern Dynasties. Compare the present piece to an elaborate stoneware vase with moulded decoration and sumptuos ornaments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (late 6th cent.). Concerning the ornamentation, this group of ceramics, to which the present piece also belongs, show certain influences from Central Asia.
