An unusual and rare wineglass cooler 'Monteith Bowl'
Lot-No. 92
Proceeds : 11.100 €
China, Kangxi-period (1662-1722). Porcelain with blue painting. Large bowl, the rim with 8 lobed semi-circles. In the centre a large circular reserve with blossoming prunus branch on a rock. The wall with revolving floral reserves. The pinnacle-like mouth with star-grid and swastika underground (min. rest.). Stylised two-character mark within double-circle. H. 14 cm, diam. 32 cm. - The characteristic shape of this type derives from European models made of silver or pewter. Those vessels bore a high resemblance to the cloak's hem of a Scot named 'Monteith', which led to the common name. At the beg. of the 18th cent. the shape inspired Chinese porcelain manufactories and exquisite blue-and-white examples were made. See:Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, New York 1974, S. 36f. Compare the present piece to a nearly identical example in the coll. of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Inv. no. 1978.503.
