India, 18th/19th cent. Steel with gold painting. Dagger with straight single edged blade and reinforced point. Handle adorned with fighting animals and curled to an animals head with inlaid eyes, consealing a hidden compartment. In a leather sheath with matching knife containing another hidden blade in the knob. L. 35 cm. - The kard was used in India and Persia since the 14th cent. Its reinforced point was used to penetrate chain mail.
