China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Carved caramel-coloured to brown partly translucent rhinoceros horn. Characteristic form corresponding to the natural tapered form of the horn with wide flaring rim. Exterior decorated on both sides with taotie masks under a pair of dragons in archaic style. Between the masks on the sides five qilins in low relief crawling up the wall. Lip and splayed foot decorated with a meander band. H. 9 cm.
