China, 1770 (Qianlong Period 1735-1796). Gilt bronze. Depiction of the buddha of long life on a rectangular plinth supported by four stylized vajra elements. A long cloth, upon which the buddha sits in vajrasana, cascades from the pedestal at the front. Elaborate jewellery adorns the head, arms and chest of Amitayus. His hair is tied up to a high chignon, which is hardly visible behind his crown. Plinth at the front with inscription on the lower part dating the figure to the 27th year of Qianlong's reign 'Da qing qianlong gengyin nian jing zao' (大清乾隆庚寅年敬造). H. 19 cm. - This figure most likely was part of the 10.000 Amitayus statues, which the Qianlong emperor commissioned for his 60th birthday. Compare to nearly identical figures with dating inscriptions in the Wou Kiuan Collection.
