Th. was taught as bookbinder before studying at the Copenhagen academy 1895-99 under H. Grönvold a. J. F. Vermehren with a scholarship of the Icelandic parliament. Thereafter he was pupil of H. Foss in Copenhagen until 1902. Because in Iceland he could not earn his living with his paintings alone he also worked as a drawing teacher a. set up a business with arts a. crafts supplies. He was also member of the committee that designed the Icelandic flag. Today Th. is appreciated as one of the first a. most important landscape painters of the island.
