T. studied 1934-38 at the Düsseldorf academy. After the war he worked as stage designer before moving to Bonn a. to Medellin in Colombia 1952-55. In 1957 he became professor at the Berlin Hochschule für Bildende Künste, later its director; G. Baselitz was among his pupils. Among his most important works are wall a. ceiling paintings in the Berlin Charlottenburg palace, in the library of the university of Heidelberg as well as in the Cologne town hall. He exhibited among others at the Documenta I-III a. received many awards.
