Probably 1922, gouache, 22 x 17,5 cm, lo. ri. monogr. MW, verso at the upper margin inscribed 'Marianne v. Werefkin Julia um 19..' matted a. framed under glass. - Provenance: Collection of the artist Walter Dexel, Brunswick. - Russian paintress, one of the most eminent figures of expressionism. W. was taught painting by I. Repin since 1880, since 1883 she studied at the Moscow academy. Together with her companion in life, A. von Jawlensky, she settled in Munich 1916 a. soon became part of the later 'Blauer Reiter'. The outburst of World War I forced her to emigrate to Switzerland in 1914.
