Ca. 1630, oil/wood, 45 x 63,5 cm, cradled. - The painting is a typical example of the artist’s later work. Few items in minimised colouring don’t try to impose on the spectator. Precisely this austerity and reserve characterise the painting’s genuitiy and appeal. - Expertise: According to the expert report of Walther Bernt, Munich 1979 it is an autograph work by Clara Peeters; Claus Grimm, Amsterdam 1980, is of the same opinion. - Exhibition: The painting was exhibited in Los Angeles as authentic Peeters: Women Artists 1550-1950, Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1976, cat. no. 18. - Literature: The painting is published with ill.: A. Sutherland: Women Artists, exh. cat. Los Angeles 1976, p. 133, fig. 18. Hibbs Decoteau considers the painting to be from the circle of Peeters: P. Hibbs Decoteau: C. P., 1992, p. 58f. - Provenance: Thomas Agnew and Sons Ltd, London, 1976; Gallery Heiniger, Wichtrach, 23. November 1981; private collection Kiel; thence by descent in private collection Hamburg. - Flemish-Dutch still life painter. Little is known of life a. career of the artist, possibly she was a pupil of O. Beert in Antwerp. In 1612 she settled in Amsterdam, in 1617 she moved to The Hague.
